Hudson County Executive-elect Craig Guy today endorsed James E. McGreevey to become the next mayor of Jersey City.
McGreevey, who served as Governor of New Jersey from 2002 to 2004, announced last week that he would seek a return to public life in a November 2025 non-partisan municipal election to pick the next mayor of the state’s second-largest city.
“Jersey City needs a Mayor who has the experience, vision, and passion to make Jersey City a more affordable, safe, and efficient city,” said Guy. “I know Jim will put working families first and will fight for the city to remain a place that all can call home.”
McGreevey faces Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea – and probably some others – as he looks to succeed three-term Mayor Steve Fulop, now a candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
O’Dea served as a Jersey City councilman from 1985 to 1993 and has held his county post since he won a 1997 special election convention by one vote.
Guy, a former Jersey City police lieutenant, was elected county executive last week and takes office in January. He’s served as chief of staff to his predecessor, Tom DeGise, who didn’t seek re-election after nineteen years in office.
This is an important get for McGreevey; Guy maintains strong relationships with local officials and Democratic leaders in Jersey City.
“I am honored to receive Craig Guy’s endorsement and am eager to get to work with him to build a Jersey City where working families can stay and succeed,” said McGreevey. “Craig understands the importance of affordability and safety in our city, and my administration will work in partnership with the County to improve Jersey City for all working families.”
