Bergen Democrats sweep commissioner races

The 7-0 Democratic majority on the Bergen County Board of Commissioners remains intact after incumbents Mary Amoroso, Germaine Ortiz, and Thomas Sullivan defeated Republicans Jay Costa, John Dinice, and Andrea Slowikowski.

The Democratic margin of victory is roughly 40,000 votes.

Republicans have not won a countywide election in Bergen County since 2013.

Sullivan, a labor leader with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1964, was first appointed in 2015 and won a special election later that year; he had previously served as a councilman, first in Bergenfield and later in Montvale.  Amoroso, a former Bergen Record reporter, was a Mahwah councilwoman before winning countywide office. Ortiz was a Palisades Park councilwoman and school board member.

Amoroso and Ortiz flipped two Republican seats.

Dinice is a Mahwah school board member, and Slowikowski is the Demarest council president. Costa, a realtor and political newcomer, is a Second Amendment activist.
