A group of women elected officials in Bergen County have formed a “Women for Josh” group to back the re-election campaign for Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wykoff) in New Jersey’s 5th district.

“In Congress, Josh has been a leader on so many issues we believe in, including protecting a woman’s right to choose and her access to essential health care, fighting for equal pay, and strengthening policies that help parents take leave and care for their children,” said Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg.  “At a time when women’s rights are constantly under attack, it’s never been more important that we re-elect representatives like Josh.”

The group, which has 24 honorary co-chairs, will advise the two-term congressman on policy issues and strategy and lead an outreach campaign to women voters.

Gottheimer faces a challenge from Glen Rock Councilwoman Arati Kreibich in the July 7 Democratic primary.

In addition to Weinberg, the group includes Assemblywomen Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Englewood) and Lisa Swain (D-Fair Lawn), all four women on the Bergen County Board of Freeholders, and the mayors of Demarest, Oakland and Oradell.

“Josh has been a strong, effective voice for gender equality, including helping to empower women in the workplace, fighting to prevent discrimination and harassment, and working to strengthen opportunities for women and girls,” Vainieri Huttle said in a statement released by the Gottheimer campaign.

Swain said that Gottheimer has been her ally in fights to defend a woman’s right to choose, equal pay and women’s health care.

I am thankful to be guided by women who have passionately dedicated their lives to public service and given so much to our District. To be fighting alongside councilwomen, mayors, freeholders, assemblywomen, and State Senators to make a difference for our families is the ultimate privilege,” Gottheimer said. “We are in this fight together against all attempts to turn back the clock on decades of progress.”

In addition to Weinberg, Vainieri Huttle and Swain, the honorary co-chairs of “Women for Josh” include: Freeholders Mary Amoroso, Germaine Ortiz, Joan Voss and Tracy Zur; Demarest Mayor Melinda Iannuzzi; Oakland Mayor Linda Schwager; Oradell Mayor Dianne Didio; Bergenfield Councilwoman Ora Kornbluth; Fair Lawn Councilwoman Cristina Cutrone; Haworth Councilwomen Heather Wasser and Jacqueline Guenego;  Maywood Council President Katherine Bennin; New Milford Councilwomen Randi Duffie and Hedy Grant; Oradell Council President Tracy Schoenberg; Park Ridge Councilwoman Kelly Epstein; River Edge Councilwomen Ellen Busteed and Michelle Kaufman; Rochelle Park Councilwoman Linda Boniface; Teaneck Councilwoman Gervonn Romney Rice; and Woodcliff Lake Councilwoman Jacqueline Gadalet.
