Rob Bengivenga, a 38-year-old councilman from South Plainfield, was elected Middlesex County Republican Chairman on Tuesday.

He defeated Sharon Hubberman by a vote of 191-79, a margin of 71%-29%, to win the party post.

The incumbent, Lucille Panos, did not seek re-election to the post she’s held since 2016.  She backed Bengivenga for the post.

Bengivenga has received endorsements from 21 of 22 Republican municipal chairs.  Hubberman had the support of Councilwoman Anita Greenberg Belli, the Old Bridge GOP chair.

He has also won the backing of former Gov. Donald DiFrancesco, State Sens. Samuel Thompson (R-Old Bridge) and Christopher Bateman (R-Branchburg), Republican State Committeeman Donald Katz, and GOP mayors from Dunellen, South River, Middlesex Borough, and South Plainfield.

Earlier this evening, Middlesex County Demcoratic Chairman Kevin McCabe scored a landslide re-election bid against Charlie Kratovil, the publisher of New Brunswick Today.
