South Plainfield Councilman Rob Bengivenga has received endorsements from 21 of 22 Republican municipal chairs in his bid to become the next Middlesex County GOP Chairman.

The incumbent, Lucille Panos, is not seeking re-election and has endorsed Bengivenga, a 38-year-old five-term councilman, as her successor.

Sharon Hubberman is challenging Bengivenga in the June 22 election.   The lone Republican municipal chair supporting her is Anita Greenberg Belli, an Old Bridge councilwoman.

Bengivenga has also won the backing of former Gov. Donald DiFrancesco, State Sens. Samuel Thompson (R-Old Bridge) and Christopher Bateman (R-Branchburg), Republican State Committeeman Donald Katz, and GOP mayors from Dunellen, South River, Middlesex Borough, and South Plainfield.

“I am humbled by the support of my fellow republic leaders,” said Bengivenga, who has won five local elections despite a 2-1 voter registration edge for Democrats. “I am eager to start working with all republicans throughout Middlesex County, so that we, together can build an organization and secure more victories throughout the county.”

Panos is stepping down after five years.
