Sweeney joins Joshi’s Edison bandwagon

Senate President Steve Sweeney is backing Sam Joshi to become the next mayor of Edison.

There is no one better to deliver for his residents than Sam Joshi and I am proud to endorse him for mayor and to support the entire Middlesex County Democratic Organization ticket this June and November.”

Joshi is running in the Democratic primary on a ticket headed by Gov. Phil Murphy and State Sen. Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield) to lead New Jersey’s fifth largest municipality.

“I know full well the importance of strong local leadership,” said Sweeney, who began his political career as a Gloucester County freeholder.  “A mayor must not only be the leader of his community and a strong fiscal manager but also be someone who can work with county, state and federal officials to bring additional revenue and services back to his town.”

Joshi faces Mahesh Bhagia, the Democratic municipal chairman, and Arthur Esposito in the primary.  Mayor Thomas Lankey, a Democrat, is skipping the primary but has not ruled out running as an independent.

Sweeney joins Murphy, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-Long Branch) and Middlesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe in supporting Joshi for mayor.
