Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly is interested in State Sen. Nellie Pou’s seat, but only if she gives it up.
“If she runs again, no,” Wimberly said when asked if he would run for Pou’s Senate seat in 2021. “If she doesn’t run, then of course I would be interested.”
The two Democrats have served together since Wimberly took Pou’s Assembly seat after the latter moved to the legislature’s upper chamber in 2012.
Pou served in the Assembly for 14 years, between 1997 and 2011, before moving up to the Senate.
Though the 35th legislative district is safely-Democratic, Pou could face a challenge from the inside.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh ousted her from her role as the city’s business administrator after taking office last year.
Sayegh could decide to field his own candidate in an effort to win control of Pou’s seat.
