Sweeney backs Murphy chief of staff pick

By Nikita Biryukov, February 07 2019 4:22 pm

Senate President Steve Sweeney is fully behind Gov. Phil Murphy’s new chief of staff, George Helmy.

“I think he’s great,” Sweeney said.

There’s been tension between Sweeney and Murphy since the latter took office, and Sweeney thinks that Helmy, who was State Director for U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, could ease those tensions.

“If they let him be chief of staff — and let him be the chief of staff — absolutely,” Sweeney said when asked if Helmy could improve the relationship between the two top New Jersey Democrats.

Helmy replaced Pete Cammarano, who left last month.
