Sarlo, Calabrese, Schaer win in the 36th district

The New Jersey Globe is projecting that State Sen. Paul Sarlo (D-Wood-Ridge), Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese (D-Cliffside Park), and Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-Passaic) have won re-election to the 36th legislative district.

They beat Republican brothers Chris and Craig Auriemma – Chris ran for Senate, Craig for Assembly – and Ana Castillo.

The 36th district has historically hosted competitive races, and both Sarlo and Schaer flipped Republican-held seats to win their first terms in the Assembly in 2001 and 2005, respectively.

But the district’s days of competitiveness on the state legislative level are at least temporarily over; Calabrese, appointed in 2018 and one of the legislature’s youngest members, never experienced the district’s more contested era.

Final 36th district results:

Sarlo 56.9% // Auriemma 43.1%

Schaer 28.4%, Calabrese 27.8% // Viso 21.9%, Auriemma 21.9%
