Durr apologizes for anti-Muslim slur

Republican has 2,095-vote lead in bid to unseat Senate President Steve Sweeney

Edward Durr, a little-down truck driver who appears to have unseated New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney in South Jersey’s 3rd legislative district, has apologized for xenophobic, anti-Muslim social media posts.

“I’m a passionate guy and I sometimes say things in the heat of the moment,” Durr said in a statement released early Friday morning. “If I said things in the past that hurt anybody’s feelings, I sincerely apologize.”

In 2019, Durr used Twitter in an attack on Muslims.

“Mohammed was a pedophile! Islam is a false religion! Only fools follow Muslim teachings! It is a cult of hate!” Durr wrote.

Now the possible giant slayer is walking back his comments.

“I support everybody’s right to worship in any manner they choose and to worship the God of their choice. I support all people and I support everybody’s rights,” Durr said. “That’s what I am here to do, work for the people and support their rights.”

Durr currently leads Sweeney, the longest-serving legislative leader in New Jersey history, by 2,095 votes.  If he wins, he’ll be the first Republican to represent the 3rd district in 20 years.
