Two assemblymen from the 40th district are joining the ranks of the chamber’s GOP leadership, Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield) announced Friday.
Assemblyman Chris DePhillips (R-Wyckoff) will replace Holly Schepisi (R-River Vale) as deputy leader. Schepisi was elected to fill the remainder of State Sen. Gerald Cardinale’s term after he died in February. She vacated her seat in the lower chamber in March.
“I’m honored Leader Bramnick has asked me to join our caucus’s leadership team and look forward to implementing our vision into action,” DePhillips said.
Assemblyman Kevin Rooney (R-Wyckoff) will become deputy Republican whip.
“Chris and Kevin bring years of knowledge and hard work to our caucus leadership team,” Bramnick said. “I cannot commend them enough.”
Rooney joined the legislature in 2016, when he was appointed to fill the Assemblyman Scott Rumana’s term after he joined the New Jersey Superior Court bench. DePhillips won his seat in 2017.
Their district is safely Republican. Democrats haven’t won there a single time since the state adopted its 40-district map in 1973.
