Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) lauded movement toward a new Port Authority Bus Terminal Friday.
“This is a day so many of us have wished for and worked for over the years,” she said. “This is a technologically ambitious and creative plan that will reimagine the bus terminal, and drastically improve the daily commuting experience for hundreds of thousands of New Jersey commuters for many years to come.”
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Friday announced it would hold four virtual public meetings on the terminal redevelopment later this month, also proclaiming it would begin a federal environmental review process that must be completed before work can begin on the blighted facility.
The Federal Transit Administration on Friday said it would begin drafting an environmental impact statement for the proposed redevelopment. The Port Authority in January announced it would redevelop its existing bus terminal instead of building a new facility beneath the Javits Center.
New Jersey lawmakers opposed the Javits location, believing it would lengthen commutes for New Jersey residents traveling into New York.
“A 21st Century bus terminal that provides greater reliability, more space and basic modern conveniences will make life easier for commuters, and their families, and will play a crucial role in the further growth of our regional economy, and indeed serve to bolster the economic vitality of the entire nation,” Weinberg said.
