Dems will move fast to replace Barclay

By David Wildstein, June 18 2018 7:33 pm

Camden County Democrats are expected to move quickly to fill the seat of Assemblyman Arthur Barclay, who has told party leaders he will be resigning from his 5th district seat.

The vacancy comes at a bad time for the Assembly Democratic leadership.  If Barclay formalizes his resignation today, the earliest the county committee can meet to fill the vacancy is June 24.

Since voters in the overwhelmingly Democratic district will fill the remaining fourteen months of Barclay’s term in a November 2018 special election, it’s possible Democrats will place a caretaker in the seat and then nominate someone else to run in the special.  Placeholders are a vintage Camden Democratic move.

Sources say that Camden city councilwoman Sheila Davis might emerge as a leading candidate for the seat.
