Assemblyman Ronald Dancer (R-Plumsted) declined to comment on whether Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore should resign.
Earlier this month, a federal grand jury indicted Gilmore on tax evasion charges. The indictment alleges Gilmore evaded payments of more than $1 million in taxes. He is charged with filing false tax returns, failing to pay payroll taxes, and making false statements on an application for a bank loan.
When asked if Gilmore should resign, Dancer pretended not to hear the question. Earlier, he had declined to comment on non-specific questions about Gilmore.
Gilmore does not intend to leave his post as county chair, nor will he give up his position as chairman of the Ocean County Board of Elections. He plans to fight the charges.
