Sacco likes Murphy’s top court pick

State Sen. Nicholas Sacco (D-North Bergen) called in “very fitting” for Gov. Phil Murphy to announce his nomination of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s former law clerk, Rachel Wainer Apter, to the New Jersey Supreme Court on what would have been her 88th birthday.

“Ms. Wainer Apter’s career has demonstrated a passion and commitment to justice and equality, and she has shown herself to be a fierce defender of the rights of those most vulnerable to discrimination,” said Sacco, the mayor of North Bergen.

Wainer Apter, the state Division of Civil Rights Director, is Murphy’s choice to replace Jaynee LaVecchia.  LaVecchia announced last week that she would retire on August 31 after 20 years as an associate justice of the state’s top court.

“Her nomination is a continuation of the lasting legacy of Justice Ginsberg here in New Jersey, and the country, as a new generation is poised to ensure we continue and build upon the ideals of equal justice under the law and equal opportunity to succeed,” Sacco said.
