Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin appears supportive of Gov. Phil Murphy’s nominee to the New Jersey Supreme Court, although he stopped just short of endorsing her nomination.
“I would like to congratulate Fabiana Pierre-Louis on her nomination to serve on New Jersey’s Supreme Court. This moment in time marks a historic period for New Jersey and its judiciary,” Coughlin said. “I commend Governor Murphy for his pick. As the first Black woman in the court’s history, Ms. Pierre-Louis would provide the bench with much needed diversity and I wish her luck in the weeks ahead.”
Coughlin’s statement comes after a day of positive statements about Pierre-Louis from legislators and bar association officials.
The Speaker went further than Senate President Steve Sweeney, who congratulated the Justice-designate and said he looks forward to meeting her.
