Anne Iannone, a popular and respected player in Somerset County politics for decades, passed away on Sunday evening.

She was 70.

Iannone served as North Plainfield Democratic municipal chair, and Hillsborough Democratic municipal vie chair.  She also served on the Somerset County Board of Elections.

In 1982, she was elected Somerset County Democratic vice chair on a ticket with Orlando Abbruzzese.  Se replaced Julia Cino, who decided not to seek re-election.  She served until 1985, when she and Abbruzzese stepped down.

She sought the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in 1983 after Democrats had failed to field a full slate in the 16th district.  Raymond Fennimore, an advocate of using laser beam technology at the U.S. Department of Defense, had filed nominating petitions.

Iannone ran as a write-in in a bid to stop Fennimore from running in the general election. She lost by about 365 votes.

Iannone ran the Somerville motor vehicles agency for many years.

Her partner, former Hillsborough mayor John Guerrera, died in 2009.
