Former New Brunswick councilman dies

By David Wildstein, April 29 2018 12:52 pm

Joseph Vincze, who served two terms as a New Brunswick City Councilman, passed away on April 27.  He was 74.

Vincze was elected councilman in 1976 and re-elected in 1980.  In 1984, New Brunswick Mayor/State Sen. John Lynch denied him part support for re-election to a third term and replaced him with Bill Nemes.  His departure marked the end of a 5th Ward City Council seat that had been held for decades by someone of Hungarian descent.

In 1992, Vincze was the campaign manager for a “New Democrats” slate of city council candidates that emerged in opposition to Lynch.  The campaign extended beyond the June primary and into court amidst challenges of absentee ballot manipulation after Councilman George Hendricks held his seat by just nine votes.
