Gerry Yavor, well-known to Central Jersey pol insiders as the chief of staff to Assemblyman George Otlowski (D-Perth Amboy) in the 1970s and 1980s, died on April 7. She was 84.
Yavor first came to prominence in the 1950s, while still a teenager, leading an all-woman band known as Gerry Steele and the Latinettes. The ban appeared in Brooklyn nightclubs and on the Catskills circuit, as well as on several television shows.
In Perth Amboy, Yavor was a Democratic county committeewoman and managed the campaign headquarters’ of multiple local candidates. She later served as president of the Raritan Bay Medical Center Auxiliary and of the Edison Oak Tree Senior Citizens.
Otlowski served in the legislature from 1974 to 1992, and as mayor of Peth Amboy from 1976 to 1990.
