Former Senate President Steve Sweeney has raised nearly $2.5 million for his bid to become the Democratic nominee for governor of New Jersey, putting him about $447,000 away from qualifying for New Jersey’s gubernatorial public financing program’s full match.
Sweeney joined the race for governor in December 2023 and so far has the second-highest fundraising haul in the Democratic field in advance of the June 10 primary election.
His $2.488 million raised nets him an additional $4.6 million in matching funds, giving Sweeney roughly $7.1 million so far for his statewide campaign. New Jersey has a $2-for-every-$1 system, up to $5.5 million in public dollars.
As matching funds recipients, Sweeney and the other candidates have agreed to cap their hard dollar primary campaign spending at $8.7 million. To reach the limit, candidates must race $3.2 million.
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop raised enough to qualify for the full match in April 2023.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) raised $1.66 million during the first six weeks of his gubernatorial campaign. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has raised $1.146 million for his gubernatorial bid Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) raised $600,000 in her first 24 hours as a candidate; she has not yet announced her year-end fundraising numbers.
Republican Jack Ciattarelli $2.935 million for his campaign for the Republican nomination for governor, enough to qualify for the full match.
