Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has raised a substantial $1.146 million for his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor and has brought in enough to qualify for matching funds under the state’s gubernatorial public financing program.
Baraka raised $497,000 during the fourth quarter of 2024, and has $505,000 cash-on-hand.
He appears eligible to receive roughly $1.9 million in matching funds, and over $3 million total so far.
But Baraka’s burn rate will concern supporters: in 2024, a little more than five months before the primary, the three-term Newark mayor has already spent about $641,000.
Six Democratic gubernatorial candidates — Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) and Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, former Senate President Steve Sweeney, and Baraka – will meet for their first debate on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 7 PM. The debate, sponsored by the New Jersey Globe, On New Jersey, and the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University, will be aired on internet and social media sites, and C-SPAN.
