Former Gov. Chris Christie backed impeaching President Donald Trump over last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol Sunday.
“If inciting to insurrection isn’t, then I don’t really know what is,” Christie said when asked weather Trump’s goading his supporters into assaulting Congress was an impeachable offense.
Christie’s comments were made on ABC’s “This Week.”
Though he has sometimes split with Trump in the past, most notably on mask use following his hospitalization with COVID-19, Christie has, until now, largely been a steadfast supporter of Trump.
Christie, who is likely considering launching another presidential bid in 2024, isn’t alone in his about-face on impeachment, which he opposed when Trump was impeached in 2019 over his allegedly withholding congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to force foreign investigations of President-elect Joe Biden, who was then a candidate.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) and her members are pushing to impeach Trump over the attack, and they appear to have the votes to succeed, though how such an effort fares in the Senate remains to be seen.
