Republican State Chairman Doug Steinhardt called on the Democratic-controlled legislature to check and balance the Democratic governor, Phil Murphy, following a statement to Tucker Carlson on Fox News that he “wasn’t thinking of the Bill of Rights” when he approved New Jersey’s shelter-in-place executive order.
“In New Jersey, there is no elected state office above Governor. The buck stops there,” said Steinhardt. “The Bill of Rights is not a science experiment; on that there is no compromise.”
Steinhardt said that all elected officials are being tested on their response to the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
“The fundamental fabric that constitutes the Bill of Rights is constructed of individual fibers each as important as the other,” he said. “No right is elevated above another and forsaking one right is forsaking all of them.”
