Now that he’s out of the GOP congressional primary in New Jersey’s 5th district, Montvale Mayor Michael Ghassali has closed out his account and repaid himself most of the money he had loaned his campaign.

Ghassali had loaned $600,000 to his campaign to unseat two-term Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), which made up the bulk of the $861,900 he had raised before withdrawing from the race on April 2 and endorsing former Cresskill Councilman John McCann.

He  repaid $550,000 of the loan today and have forgiven the remainder of the debt he was owed.

The New Jersey Globe first reported on March 24 that Ghassali had ceased campaigning after burning through his donor money and had no plans to dip into the personal loan he had made to boost his fundraising numbers.
