The legacy of John J. Giblin continues.
The president of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 68, Giblin served as an Essex County freeholder and as a state senator.
His son, Thomas P. Giblin, has enjoyed a storied career in New Jersey politics as a labor leader, freeholder, surrogate, county chairman, Democratic state chairman and since 2005 as an assemblyman.
Now it looks like two of Tom Giblin’s sons will be mayors.
Patrick Giblin became mayor of Cranford in January, and Tuesday’s non-partisan elections put Ted Giblin in line to become mayor of Verona when the council reorganizes on July 1.
Councilwoman-elect Christine McGrath served as treasurer of Ted Giblin’s 2017 council race and if Alex Roman holds his three-vote lead, it looks like the votes are there to see Giblin replace Kevin Ryan as the mayor.
A third Giblin, Tom’s daughter, Noreen, was recently named cabinet secretary by Gov. Phil Murphy.
Vincent Giblin, Tom’s brother, served as business manager of Local 68 from 1975 to 2004 and as general president of the International Union of Operating Engineers from 2005 to 2012. He passed away last October.
