Gerald Scharfenberger will run for State Assembly seat in the 13th district, seeking the open seta of retiring Assemblywoman Amy Handlin.

“I’ve decided to run,” Scharfenberger told the New Jersey Globe.  “I just made the decision last night.”

Scharfenberger was a longtime Middletown mayor and township committeeman before winning a special election convention last year for Monmouth County freeholder.  He won a one-year unexpired term on the freeholder board in November.

“I hope to add a voice of reason in Trenton,” Scharfenberger said.

He is expected to have little trouble securing the Republican organization line for Assembly.

Scharfenberger’s decision opens up a freeholder seat this year.
