Rendo exploring Assembly bid in 39th

Former Lt. Governor candidate may run for Auth seat

Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo, the 2017 Republican candidate for Lt. Governor, running for State Assembly in the 39th district next year.

Rendo will seek the seat of Assemblyman Bob Auth (R-Old Tappan), who became a late entry into the race for Congress against Rep. Josh Gottheimer.

“Bob is an exemplary and dedicated public servant. He has served as the 39th District in the New Jersey State Assembly with honor and distinction. He will serve his constituents well if elected to represent the 5th Congressional district. I wish him well,” Rendo said on Monday.  “As to replacing him in the New Jersey State Assembly, after consulting with my family, friends and colleagues, I have decided to explore the possibility of running for his Assembly seat joining Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi representing the interest of our 39th District residents.”

Rendo said that his interest in Auth’s Assembly seat doesn’t mean he’s taking sides in the congressional primary.

“I want to make a disclaimer,” Rendo said.  “That doesn’t mean I’m endorsing Auth for Congress.  I believe that we have great candidates willing to take on Gottheimer.  Let the best person win.”

Rendo was re-elected mayor in 2019, defeating council president Jacqueline Gradeleta with 56% of the vote.

He ran statewide in 2017 after being picked as the Lt. Governor candidate by Kim Guadagno, New Jersey’s first Lt. Governor and the GOP candidate for governor.
