Today is a lucky day for Rep.-elect Tom Malinowski (D-Rocky Hill).
The new 7th district congressman drew #2 in a lottery of 101 House freshmen to determine office space in the next Congress. That will give him one of the better office suites.
Rep.-elect Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) picked #49, Rep.-elect Andy Kim (D-Marlton) drew #65, and Rep.-elect Jeff Van Drew (D-Dennis) was last among the New Jersey freshmen House members with #69.
The congressional office lottery is a tradition that closes out the orientation of new House members. Each new House member is called up in alphabetical order to pick a by numbered chip.
There is a considerable difference between the best and worst offices, especially with a large freshman class.
