Frelinghuysen fundraising for Webber

Pitches donors and volunteers to keep 11th district Republican

By David Wildstein, October 19 2018 3:18 pm

Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen is raising money for Jay Webber, the Republican candidate to succeed him in New Jersey’s 11th district.

“I wanted to make sure that you knew I have endorsed my good friend Jay Webber for Congress, Frelinghuysen wrote in a fundraising appeal.  “I believe he is the right person to carry on the tradition of honest representation that the people of North Jersey are accustomed to and deserving of.”

Frelinghuysen has $500,000 remaining in his own campaign accounts and has contributed just $2,000 to the Webber campaign.  He has contributed nothing to the National Republican Congressional Committee during the third quarter of 2018.

“Jay needs to get his message out,” said Frelinghuysen.  “He’s running on his positive vision for America and he needs the dollar and cents to keep his message on the air.”

Frelinghuysen says that Webber is running a grassroots campaign against a “large special interest effort.”

“They need all hands on deck making phone calls and knocking on their neighbor’s doors,” the departing congressman said.

Frelinghuysen announced on January 29 that he would not seek re-election after 24 years in the House and 44 years in public office.

Webber won a hotly contested Republican primary and now faces Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who had initially entered the race expecting to challenge the incumbent.

“I have gotten to known Jay during his service in the state Assembly. I’ve come to know a man who carries himself with integrity, takes his role serving the public very seriously and holds a relatable and respectable set of values,” said Frelinghuysen. “He and his wife, Johanna and their seven children have been a pleasure to call constituents and friends.”

Frelinghuysen did not immediately return a 2:32 PM call seeking comment.
