Election results in today’s special school referendums

In elections that produced single-digit turnouts, voters in eight New Jersey municipalities voted today in special school referendum elections that would allow school districts to receive at least 40% of eligible funding through the Educational Facilities and Construction Financing Act.

Voters in Highlands opted to join the Atlantic Highlands School District and the Henry Hudson Regional School District to create a PK-12 regional district by a vote of 976-539 (64%-36%).

North Caldwell voters rejected a bond referendum authorizing $51 million for the improvement of two schools by a vote of 968-731 (57%-43%).

Spotswood voters approved a plan to issue bonds of up to $12.655 million for school improvements by a 2-1 margin, 640-301 (68%-32%).

A proposal to approve bonding for $6.5 million in school improvements in Closter was approved by an overwhelming 79% of the vote, 360-98.

In Pittsgrove, voters approved a $14.65 million bond referendum to renovate five schools by a 62%-38% margin, 551-336.

Voters in Hopatcong rejected a $7.9 million referendum for school renovations by 385 votes, 1,087-1,472 (42.5-57.5%).  As a result, an additional $5.4 million plan was also defeated.

Results in Butler and Lawrence Township (Cumberland County) were not immediately available.
