Gov. Phil Murphy has named the Rev. Ronald Slaughter, the pastor of the St. James AME Church in Newark, as the vice chair of the New Jersey State Parole Board.
“Since his nomination to the New Jersey State Parole Board in 2019, Reverend Ron Slaughter has demonstrated a sincere commitment to serving the people of New Jersey while working to transform and modernize our parole practices,” Murphy said. “As we work to further reduce New Jersey’s prison population and recidivism rates while recognizing rehabilitation and supporting our returning residents, I am extremely confident in his ability to provide insightful guidance and steady leadership as vice chair of the Parole Board.”
Slaughter also holds a community relations post with the Newark Department of Public Safety.
If the 11th district congressional seat opens up, Slaughter could be a candidate for the Democratic nomination.
