If you’re like David Cruz and decided to take the weekend off while five county organizations made endorsements in the hotly-contested race for U.S. Senate — that’s okay if politics isn’t your job — here’s a rundown on a busy few days in New Jersey politics.
Andy Kim won Democratic county conventions in Sussex and Warren, while Tammy Murphy won the organization line in Union County, 19-3, in a vote of the party’s screening committee.
Kim defeated Murphy, 101-76 (573%-43%) in Sussex, and won Warren with 80.5% of the vote.
On the Republican side, Christine Serrano Glassner won the Warren County GOP convention with 82% of the vote, while Curtis Bashaw was the unanimous winner at the Cumberland County Republican convention.
Former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan won the Monmouth County GOP convention after being the top vote-getter on the first and second ballots. Bashaw won in Ocean County.
On Sunday evening, Kim won the endorsement of the Princeton Community Democratic Organization with 91.4% of the vote, with Patricia Campos-Medina finishing second. Murphy and Lawrence Hamm tied with one vote each.
The three-term incumbent, Bob Menendez, has not competed in any of the six Democratic contests so far. Under indictment on federal corruption charges – his trial is set to begin in May – Menendez has not said if he is seeking re-election.
Sue Altman, the presumptive Democratic candidate for Congress against GOP freshman Tom Kean, Jr. in New Jersey’s 7th district, captured organization lines in Sussex, Union, and Warren this weekend. (She won the Hunterdon convention last week.)
In the race for Kim’s open 3rd district House seat, Rajesh Mohan, a cardiologist from Holmdel, won the Monmouth County Republican line against Shirley Maia-Cusick and three others.
The Bergen County Democratic convention is tonight, while the Bergen County Republican Policy Committee will also meet to screen and vote to recommend candidates for their convention.
