A Republican candidate for the open seat in New Jersey’s 11th district is trying to tie Democratic front-runner Mikie Sherrill to U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, who was severely admonished last week by the Senate Ethics Committee.
While the Sherill campaign stopped short of defending Menendez, her campaign manager says it’s worse that Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) supported the policies of former Gov. Chris Christie.
“The hand-picked candidate of the Democratic party bosses, Mikie Sherrill, has no problem cozying up to the ethically challenged Senator Menendez,” said Webber campaign manager Phil Valenziano. “You would think ‘former federal prosecutor’ Sherrill would be appalled at the Senator’s behavior and make a clean break from him. Instead, Mikie has taken the easy road to power and looked the other way. It didn’t take long for so-called ‘outsider’ Mikie to become the ultimate insider.”
Sherrill’s campaign manager, Mollie Binotto, says it’s “laughable” for Webber to question the integrity of her candidate, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and Assistant U.S. Attorney “who put our country above all else.”
“Jay Webber’s brand of nasty politics serves one purpose–to distract voters from his record of supporting Governor Chris Christie and putting far-right policies ahead of people,” Binotto said. “Webber supports the extreme right-wing agenda that has led to higher health care premiums and increased taxes for many families in this community and has voted to ban gay marriage and restrict a woman’s right to choose. No wonder he wants to change the subject. Unfortunately for him, New Jersey voters will see right through him.”
But Valenziano says that Menendez has embarrassed New Jersey and that he should resign.
“Voters should remember Mikie’s shameful association with Senator Menendez until she does the right thing and gives Senator Menendez the public rebuke he deserves,” Valenziano said.
