Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman backed the beginning of an impeachment inquiry on President Donald Trump Thursday.
“I wanted us to do everything we could to use all the tools available to us, and we have tried them all, short of one. This is what impeachment is for,” Watson Coleman said. “If someone who ignores every legal principle of public office, who subverts the equal power of our three branches of government and who defies every rule in the book isn’t impeached, then who should be?”
Trump’s administration has repeatedly ignored congressional subpoenas issued by House Democrats as part of numerous probes conducted by the majority in the lower chamber and has ordered staffers to do the same.
The congresswoman said she had held off on calls for an inquiry over fears that the Republican-held Senate would ignore the findings of any investigation.
“I believe it is time to begin an impeachment inquiry,” Watson Coleman said. “We have to use the system we have to protect our democracy from this president.”
