The race for the U.S. Senate has become one of the nastiest in New Jersey history – at least since Bob Torricelli and Dick Zimmer faced off in 1996, and maybe even worse.
Tonight, candidates Bob Hugin and Bob Menendez will face off for their first and only debate in a contest that public opinion polls show to be close. A new Rutgers-Eagleton poll has Menendez ahead by five points among likely voters, 51%-46%, in his bid for re-election against his Republican challenger, Hugin, a retired pharmaceutical company CEO who is self-funding his campaign.
NJTV News will carry the debate at 8 PM tonight. It will also be carried on the YouTube and Facebook channels. NJTV News chief political correspondent Michael Aron and PBS NewsHour Capitol Hill correspondent Lisa Desjardins will co-moderate the debate.
Menendez’s 2012 debate with State Sen. Joseph Kyrillos (R-Middletown) is available on YouTube.
