Some members of the Brick Township Republican Club who attended a March 9 meeting say that the organization did endorse David Richter for Congress in the 3rd district.
“At our meeting on March 9th, Club President Ruthanne Scaturro asked for a motion from the floor to follow the Ocean County GOP Council recommendation and endorse David Richter for Congress,” according to former councilman Jim Fozman, Allan Cartine and Vera Fozman. “Upon a motion and second being duly made from the floor, Ruthanne asked all in favor to state ‘aye’ to which there were many responses. After that, Ruthanne then asked for any opposed to say so. There was silence in the room.”
Richter’s campaign manager, Tom Bonfonti, said he “attended the Brick GOP meeting as well and can confirm that the club did in fact endorse David.”
“The morning after the meeting I reached out to Ruthanne via text message. Our campaign asked Ruthanne personally for a quote to accompany the release announcing the club’s endorsement,” Bonfonti said. “At no time did she refute the endorsement that her club made, despite her later claims of being ‘stunned’ by our public announcement.”
Bonfonti provided the New Jersey Globe with a text message exchange he had with Scaturro, a former councilwoman.
Scaturro issued a statement on Wednesday evening saying that Richter’s claim of an endorsement was not true.
“I was stunned yesterday to read a press release from David Richter that our club had unanimously endorsed him for Congress, when no vote was ever taken and no endorsement was ever made,” Scaturro said. “I called the Richter campaign last night to voice my displeasure with this inaccurate release, and to reiterate that our club has not endorsed any candidate right now and, at this time, don’t plan to.”
Richter won the Ocean County GOP convention despite the recommendation of the party’s screening committee.
