Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rik Mehta has picked up a prestigious Gloucester County endorsement with the support of Greenwich Township mayor George Shivery, Jr.
“I couldn’t sit back and watch my fellow Republicans attack a candidate because they are unhappy their pick for U.S. Senate hasn’t won any county lines,” Shivery said, noting that Mehta’s new front-runner status has led other GOP candidates to begin attacking him.
Shivery says it’s going to be hard enough to beat Cory Booker – New Jersey hasn’t elected a Republican U.S. Senator since 1972 – without a divisive Republican primary.
“As a conservative Republican who has managed to win six consecutive elections in a town where the Democrats have a 5 to 1 voter registration advantage, I think I know what I’m talking about,” Shivery said. “The name calling has got to stop.”
Shivery committed to advocating on behalf of Mehta when the Gloucester County GOP screening committee meets.
Mehta faces Hirsh Singh, Tricia Flanagan and Natalie Rivera in the Republican primary.
