Rep. Mikie Sherrill mourned the passing of Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings Thursday.
“Chairman Cummings’ unwavering commitment to our country and to the people of Baltimore serves as a model to all those who aspire to serve,” Sherrill said. “A civil rights pioneer and a fierce advocate for justice, he spent his life advocating on behalf of others. His vision for a better America will be sorely missed, and my thoughts are with his family and the Baltimore community today.”
Cummings, a civil rights activist, died Thursday from complications related to longstanding heart problems.
He had served in Congress for 23 years.
He was 68.
