The Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsed Stephanie Schmid for Rep. Chris Smith’s (R-Hamilton) seat Thursday.

“People need to know their elected officials are fighting for their reproductive rights, especially during public health crises like we’re experiencing now,” fund president Alexis McGill Johnson said. “Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to endorse Stephanie Schmid for Congress in New Jersey’s 4th District. With her background as a human rights attorney and reproductive rights advocate, we know she will work tirelessly to ensure everyone can access the care they need — no matter what.”

The organization spent more than $1 million on independent expenditures backing its endorsed candidates or bruising their opponents in 2018 and 2016.

Smith, an incumbent of nearly 40 years, has staunchly opposed abortion rights over his tenure.

“I am honored to have Planned Parenthood’s support. Planned Parenthood is a critical healthcare provider for so many Americans and I am proud to be a longtime advocate and supporter of their work defending and providing reproductive healthcare across our country,” Schmid said. “It is time for New Jersey’s Fourth District to have a leader who represents our values and I am honored to be the Democratic Nominee challenging Rep. Chris Smith who has spent the past 39 years attacking reproductive rights, including access to birth control and abortion, and denigrating LGBTQ+ rights.”
