Former Trump administration official Robert Patterson now has the race he wants: a head-to-head matchup with Democrat-turned-Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew.
The other two Republicans in the race, David Richter and Brian Fitzherbert, have withdrawn and endorsed Van Drew, who switched parties last month.
“Voters will have a clear choice on June 2: a lifelong conservative vs. a lifelong liberal,” Patterson said. Van Drew can’t hide from his liberal record of being pro-abortion, pro-amnesty, pro-gun control, and anti-Trump. I’m proud of my pro-life, pro-border, pro-Trump record. South Jersey Republicans simply can’t trust Jeff Van Drew to fight for our conservative values and stand with President Trump.”
Patterson launched a new website, www.RealVanDrew.com, to highlight Van Drew’s opposition to President Donald Trump’s border wall, a vote in support of a resolution that declared Trump a racist, and Van Drew’s record as a pro-choice Democrat.
Trump has endorsed Van Drew and is coming to the 2nd district tomorrow for a Keep America Great rally in Wildwood.
Van Drew also has the support of Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Hamilton), the longest-serving Republican congressman in New Jersey history and a pro-life leader since the 1970s.
Smith’s endorsement essentially gives Van Drew something akin to the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” on pro-life issues, and an indication that Van Drew is prepared to change his position.
As a state legislator, Van Drew voted to boost funding for Planned Parenthood and called himself a pro-choice Democrat.
