New Jersey’s March for Our Lives kids weighed in on New Jersey’s Senate race on Friday, and they don’t like what Bob Hugin has to say about U.S. Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
“Bob Hugin’s support of Kavanaugh and his gun record should alarm New Jersey voters, though it shouldn’t come as a surprise when Hugin has donated hundreds of thousands to NRA-backed candidates and failed during a recent press conference to take a clear stance on banning assault weapons and weapons of mass murder,” Toms River North High School student Zachary Dougherty wrote in an op-ed on the Ocean County Politics website.
While Hugin’s stance on guns is far more moderate than it might be were he an Alabama Republican — he supports universal background checks and limiting access to guns for people with mental illnesses — he has demurred on some other issues, speaking about sportsmen’s rights when asked about a ban on assault-style weapons.
Still, Dougherty’s condemnation of Hugin over Kavanaugh is premature. The candidate hasn’t actually said whether or not he supports the nominee. Though he did call the former Kavanaugh “highly-qualified,” he said he would wait and see how his confirmation hearings play out, a smart move in a state where the conservative judge is likely to be an unpopular pick.
