U.S. Senator Bob Menendez is demanding the resignation of Robin Vaughn from the Trenton City Council.
“The language used during that meeting and on that recording is appalling, downright reprehensible and unfitting of anyone holding public office,” Menendez said. “Such hateful and homophobic rhetoric has no place in our public discourse and must be condemned in no uncertain terms.”
Vaughn is under fire for a homophobic rant during a conference call on Saturday that was supposed to be a briefing on the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
“Councilwoman Vaughn should do the good people of Trenton a favor and step aside to allow someone more fitting to represent them on the city council,” Menendez said.
Menendez hasn’t hesitated to call out local political leaders for inappropriate comments. Last year, he condemned several Trenton officials, including Vaughn, for using an anti-Semitic slur.
Gov. Phil Murphy has also called for Vaughn’s resignation.
