Martin Luther King III featured in Kennedy radio ad

King: ‘The Kings and the Kennedys have always believed that every American should be able to have justice and for generations we’ve stood side by side in that fight’

Martin Luther King III, the son of the slain civil rights leader, is featured on a new radio ad endorsing Amy Kennedy for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 2nd district.

The ad criticizes “the deadly pattern of injustice in Donald Trump’s America” and invokes the relationship between Martin Luther King and the Kennedy family.

“We need to elect leaders who understand that African-Americans aren’t treated equally or fairly,” King says in the ad.  “The Kings and the Kennedys have always believed that every American should be able to have justice and for generations we’ve stood side by side in that fight. Now, I am standing on Amy’s side, because she believes that all communities must be treated equally. “

King appeared in support of Kennedy at a progressive counter rally in January held as a protest to President Donald Trump’s appearance in Wildwood in support of Democrat-turned-Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis).

“I am honored to have the endorsement of Martin Luther King III whose leadership and ministry is so important during this time of crisis in our country and in our community,” said Kennedy.  “I believe now is the time to act, to show solidarity, to speak up, and to lift up the voices from within our community.”

Kennedy is married to former Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-Rhode Island), the son of the late U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy.  His uncles were John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

“Meaningful change and progress will require a commitment to carry forward this cause of justice with the same passion and emotion long after the media attention fades,” Kennedy said. “I have already spoken with many members of the African American community to listen and learn, and I have been bringing together leaders of the community for discussions about the most effective way to take action to help move South Jersey forward in the fight against systemic racism and injustice.”

The script: This is Martin Luther King III. There is a deadly pattern of injustice in Donald Trump’s America. Where communities of color are being ravaged by the COVID crisis. Where innocent young men are murdered for jogging in white neighborhoods. Where we live in fear of the police because of the color of our skin. We need to elect leaders who understand that African-Americans aren’t treated equally or fairly.  That’s why I am endorsing Amy Kennedy for Congress. The Kings and the Kennedys have always believed that every American should be able to have justice and for generations we’ve stood side by side in that fight. Now, I am standing on Amy’s side, because she believes that all communities must be treated equally.  This is a vote by mail election and it’s crucial you send in your ballot to make your voice heard.  Join me, Martin Luther King III, in supporting Amy Kennedy for Congress.”
