Bergen County Democratic Chairman Paul Juliano won’t try to stop Glen Rock Councilwoman Arati Kreibich’s primary bid against Rep. Josh Gottheimer.
“No,” Juliano said when asked if he’d move to get the progressive challenger out of the race. “I think that everybody has the right to do what they feel the best thing is, but I certainly support Josh wholeheartedly. I think he’s done a great job, and I think that it’s very difficult to win in the fifth congressional district as a Democrat, and he’s a proven winner.”
Juliano said it was too early to say whether Gottheimer would need the county party’s resources, let alone whether he would need the same.
Gottheimer’s role as co-chair of the House Problem Solvers Caucus, a bipartisan group seeking to break gridlock in Washington, has upset progressive Democrats who’d prefer a representative with a less moderate record.
Democratic leaders in the fifth have lined up behind Gottheimer.
All four of the district’s Democratic chairs and Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg endorsed him the day after the New Jersey Globe reported Kreibich’s bid.
The congressman had already earned Gov. Phil Murphy’s endorsement when Kreibich announced.
