Democratic congressional candidate Brigid Callahan Harrison is raising money off party-switching Rep. Jefferson Van Drew’s hiring of former White House political director Bill Stepien as his campaign consultant.
Stepien was a top advisor for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Before that, he managed both of Chris Christie’s gubernatorial campaigns and served as deputy chief of staff to the governor.
“Van Drew is filling his campaign with members of the GOP establishment,” a Harrison fundraising email said. This hire follows news that Trump’s PAC is spending at least $258,000 on ads to help Van Drew get re-elected. One thing is clear: Donald Trump is making NJ-02 his top congressional target for 2020.”
Van Drew switched to the Republican Party earlier this month, less than one year into his first term as congressman in New Jersey’s 2nd district.
Several of his top congressional and campaign staffers and consultants resigned after Van Drew bolted from the Democrats after voting against Trump’s impeachment.
