U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s recent ethics troubles aren’t necessarily costing him support in the New Jersey Legislature.
State Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez (D-Camden) said on Tuesday that she would continue to support the three-term U.S. senator despite his recent admonition before the Senate Ethics Committee.
“I have much respect for Bob Menendez as a senator. He has represented us well in Washington,” Cruz-Perez said. “He has addressed the needs of people in New Jersey and has done a fantastic job. I will be supporting him always.”
The admonition, a final stab of a 2017 ethics trial over Menendez allegedly using his office to help his longtime friend, Dr. Salomon Melgen, while accepting gifts from the same, has become a focus of U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin’s campaign for Menendez’s Senate seat.
In addition to having surrogates pump out attacks over the Ethics Committee ruling, Hugin is launching a TV ad attacking Menendez over the admonition.
