Burns will run Sherrill re-election campaign

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has picked Jackie Burns to serve as campaign manager for her re-election bid in New Jersey’s 11th district.

Burns is returning to the Sherrill team after spending 2021 as deputy campaign manager for Gov. Phil Murphy’s successful bid to become the first Democratic governor to win re-election in 44 years.

“If you don’t know Jackie Burns already by the end of 2022 you certainly will.  Jackie Burns is one of New Jersey’s rising stars,” said Mollie Binotto, who managed Sherrill’s 2018 campaign and served as Murphy’s 2021 campaign manager.  “A brilliant strategist and communicator, Burns is exactly the woman to lead Congresswoman Sherrill’s third and most important re-election bid.”

The New Jersey Globe named Burns as one of the state’s Best Political Operatives of 2021.

In 2018, Burns served as communications director for Sherill’s first House run.  In that campaign, Sherrill frightened 12-term House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen out of the race and then flipped the seat to the Democrats after 34 years of Republican representation.

She served as Sherrill’s communications director from 2019 until 2021.

Prior to joining Sherrill’s 2018 campaign, Burns spent nearly six years working for the Office of the Historian of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Seven Republicans are seeking the chance to challenge Sherrill in the newly-drawn 11th: Morris County Commissioner Tayfun Selen; Morris County Republican State Committeeman Larry Casha; former assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Paul DeGroot; former Ridgefield Park Councilman Robert Kovic; attorney Larry Friscia; screenwriter Hillery Brotschol; and Rev. Phil Rizzo, a 2021 gubernatorial candidate.
