After three campaigns, Mejia and Hathaway both struggling for cash

After raising over $1.8 million to win two primaries and a general election for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district over the last seven months, Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-Glen Ridge) has watched her warchest sink to just $27,475 for her November rematch with her Republican opponent, Randolph Councilman Joe Hathaway.

The special election in New Jersey’s 11th district was necessitated by the November 2025 resignation of Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), who had been elected governor.

Mejia won a special Democratic primary in February by less than two points and narrow 1,186 votes in an 11-candidate field, and won the general election by 21 points against Hathaway.

In June, Mejia faced a second Democratic primary in her bid for a full two-year term.  She won 82% against former Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello, Chatham Councilman Justin Strickland, and newcomer Joseph Lewis.

Hathaway, who is also mounting his fourth campaign this year, has raised $657,711 and has $5,036 cash-on-hand.

In the next-door 10th district, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-Newark) reported raising over $2.1 million and more than $814,000 in her warchest.

McIver has received national attention since her arrest last year following a confrontation with federal law enforcement officers outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark.  Federal prosecutors charged McIver with assaulting and impeding officers, allegations she has denied, contending she was carrying out her congressional oversight responsibilities. She has pleaded not guilty, and the case remains pending in federal court.

Her Republican opponent, Carmen Bucco, has $1,018 cash-on-hand.
