Joining the race

Carmen Bucco, who ran in two elections for Congress in New Jersey’s 10th district last year, will seek a State Assembly seat in the 20th legislative district.  Bucco had begun 2024 as the Republican challenger to Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) in one of the nation’s most staunchly Democratic House districts; after Payne’s death in April, Bucco filed to run in a September special election.  He lost to Democrat LaMonica McIver, 81%-16%, in the special election, and 74%-22% in the November general election.

“For far too long, our county has experienced challenges that can only be addressed with robust and effective leadership. This year presents an opportunity to advocate passionately for the rights and welfare of our neighbors,” said Bucco.  “I am committed to providing the strong leadership necessary to drive meaningful change and halt the longstanding issues we’ve been facing.”

The 20th district seats are currently held by Democrats: Annette Quijano (D-Elizabeth) is running again, and Reginald Atkins (D-Roselle) is stepping down after two terms.

Bucco won 25% in a 2023 State Senate race against Joseph Cryan (D-Union).

Sherri Parmenter, a three-term Galloway school board member, will challenge three-term Atlantic County Surrogate James Curcio.  She will compete for party support at the Atlantic County Democratic convention on March 2.  Curcio, a former freeholder, was first elected as surrogate in 2010.

“Many in our community aren’t fully aware of the essential services provided by the Surrogate’s Office during life’s most challenging times,” said Parmenter. “My campaign is committed to educating the public on its vital role and ensuring that Atlantic County benefits from a leader who combines legal expertise with a deep commitment to our community.”
