New York Giants great Tiki Barber is helping Bob Menendez raise money for his U.S. Senate re-election campaign.
Barber, Gov. Phil Murphy and U.S. Senator Cory Booker will join Menendez on Friday, May 4 for his 17th annual Night at the Races, an annual fundraiser he began in 2002 when he was running for chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Menendez traditionally has a New York area athlete on hand – the first one was New York Yankees Hall of Famer Whitey Ford.
Night at the Races is held at the Meadowlands Race Track, and the presence of Murphy and Booker sends a clear signal that the event is the place to be for New Jersey Democrats that night.
The funds raised at the first Night at the Races helped Menendez assist other House Democratic candidates during the 2002 cycle. That enabled Menendez to win his leadership post by a single vote, 104-103, against Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Connecticut). Menendez and DeLauro had both spent most of the year campaigning for the job.
